Greetings, In this auspicious day of World Astrology day (March 20th 2021) I am elated to write a post about Panchangam. Panchangam is in almost every household in Southern India where they keep it in the pooja room, which they read together at the beginning of the regional new year like Tamil Varuda Pirappu, Vishu, Ugadi to learn more about their future. This practice or reading Panchangam have slowly reduced in today’s modern household but it still is a practice in almost all Temples which has been followed religiously to plan for temple poojas on auspicious occasions.
There are two different types of Panchangam, Thiru Ganitha Panchangam and Vakya Panchangam. Sri Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam have invited all the pandits, astrologers from all around the world for a seminar to come up with a proposed panchangam standard by analysing various aspects of both these panchangam in terms of accuracy and ease of calculations and have decided to follow the Thiru Ganitha Panchangam in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) and some major temples. Currently all of the astrologers are following Thiru Ganitha Panchangam and only very few Daily calendars are using Vakya panchangam to give predictions.
Now you may ask “What is Panchangam?”
A panchānga is a Hindu calendar and almanac, which follows traditional units of Hindu timekeeping, and presents important dates and their calculations in a tabulated form. It is sometimes spelled Panchāngamu, Pancanga, Panchanga, Panchaanga, Pancangam or Panchānga, and is pronounced Panchānga. Pachangas are used in Jothidam/Jyotisha.
Panchangam Represents 5 angams, Rasi, Thithi, Nakshatram, Yogam & Karnam. Among these 5 angams Tithi plays an important role along with nakshatra in Hindus' daily as well as special activities in selecting the muhurta. There are auspicious tithis as well as inauspicious tithis, each considered more propitious for some purposes than for others. a tithi is a time-duration between the consecutive epochs that correspond to when the longitudinal-angle between sun and moon is an integer multiple of 12°. Karnam is half distance from Tithi. There are 12 Rasi and 27 nakshatras that also are used to calculate panchangam tables.
In Panchangam there is also one aspect which is called Nazhikai (Nazhika/Ghati) and Vinazhika (Vighati) with reference to sunrise or sunset to Hours and Minutes. Unit of time in Vedic Astrology In Vedic times 'Thrudi' is considered as the basic unit of time.
1 Day = 60 Nazhigai
1 Hour = 2 1/2 Nazhigai
24 Seconds = 1 Vinazhika
3600 seconds = 1 Day
An Astrologer uses all these aspects of Panchangam to prepare natal charts to calculate the position of planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) of a particular person using their day of birth, time of birth, location of their birth.
